Hyper light Drifter – A game inspired by illness

I recently came across this small indie game from Heart Machine – Hyperlight Drifter after seeing their Kickstarter in 2013. It was released in July this year. The trailer brought back a sense of memories of old games I played but I missed backing it.

The indie creator Alex Preston created this game inspired with his heart condition he is facing. This is seen in the world building and art. The game also is less on exposition in its story and uses the 8-bit aesthetic very well.

They have also taken the time to refine and make their game by not having an official release date. This goes against some of the more popular advice to set a deadline for your projects. But in this case sometimes when its personal inspiration story to you, its may be best not to follow a deadline (though they did set one release date closer to the time they had a final build of the game).

Two lesson I see and can learn is small teams can make great games and when art is personal not to rush it.
